MARQUETTE - Lake Superior State won the men's long jump, weight throw and 800-meter run, and tied for first place in the women's high jump during the Northern Challenge held Saturday at Northern Michigan University. While four members of the LSSU track and field team were competing at Boston University, the rest of the Laker squad headed up the line to NMU. Dana Skytta won the weight throw with a toss of 44-9 and placed second in the shot put and high jump. Teammate Rick Koon won the long jump with a leap of 21-2 1/4, and was fourth in the high jump and fifth in the 400-meter dash. Evan Williams took the men's 800-meter run in 1:57.56 and was one of three Lakers who finished among the top five. LSSU's Kevin Macomber (4:25.4), Luke Allen (4:27.4) and Ben Tarbutton (4:32.57) finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the men's mile. Taylor Patton cleared 5-2 to tie for first place with Catherine Chappell of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the women's high jump. Patton also placed in the top five in the triple jump and long jump. Another top finisher for the LSSU women's team was Amanda Pieczynski, who was sixth in the 200-meter dash (:27.44).
